PRESS RELEASE: Zero Tolerance Day to End FGM, Feb. 6th. #MenEndFGM

Harmful cultural practices, including female genital mutilation, FGM is deep rooted in gender inequality, patriarchy, cultural and tradition. According to UNICEF Data, More than 200 million girls and women alive
today have been cut.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves any procedure that involves partial or total removal of the external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

FGM is performed in line with tradition and social norms to
ensure that girls are socially accepted and marriageable,
and to uphold their status.

FGM is a Violation of the human rights of girls and women and Classified into Clitoridectomy, Excision, Infibulation and Unclassified.
Virgin Heart Foundation (VHF) is partnering with six communities in Imo State, South East through her programs to empowered and developed Women, girls and men agency to resist, question harmful practices, especially Female Genital Mutilation and proffer a more sustainable ways to end the harmful practice.

VHF team today is marking the Zero Tolerance Day to ending FGM while recognizing that men and boys are co-partners and powerful voices in the call for change, transforming deeply rooted social and gender norms and allowing girls and women to realize their rights and potential in terms of health, education, income, and equality. To that end, this year’s theme: Partnership with Men and Boys to Transform Social and Gender Norms to End FGM.. #MenEndFGM
