QUARTERLY REVIEW MEETING WITH GIRL’S RIGHT CLUB OF ST PATRICK’S MISSION SCHOOL OGBE. ![]() Beneficiaries :peer Educators Activity in Details: On the 1st of April 2022, Virgin Heart Foundation Team with support from Action Aid Nigeria embarked on their second quarterly review meeting with Girls of St Patrick’s mission school Ogbe autonomous community Ahiazu Mbaise LGA Imo state. During the meeting, VHF team commended the focal person of the girl’s club, Confidence, for her maximum commitment to the club as she inaugurated the JSS1 students into the club. VHF team used the medium to officially induct the new members into the club. Over fifteen female were selected and recognized in various school prefects, who are more of our peer educators. The vice principle attested that boys over the years had led the school with few girls assisting them. Virgin Heart Foundation Team expressed gratitude to the school management for his decision to pay attention for the demand for socio- inclusion and improving women’s right among students. Ten Students among the peer educators trained as peer educators voluntarily agreed to train the new members with the training manuals. OUTPUT: Review meeting successfully implemented.Ten peer educators willingly agreed to train the new members with training manuals.There was increased sensitization and improvement reporting channels OUTCOME: 30% of the girls indicated interest in joining the club The selection and recognition of over 15 female students in various school prefects has not been recorded before. The reason for this success was due to the decision of the school management to pay attention to the demand for social inclusion and improving women’s right among students. ACTIVITY 2 QUARTERLY MONITORING VISIT TO WOMEN PEER EDUCATORS CWO OGBENNEISII . ![]() On the 2nd of April 2022, Virgin Heart foundation Team was at Saint Paul’s Catholic church Ogbenneisii during first Saturday mass for the Catholic Women Organization (CWO). It was on this note, the team resolved to engage this group (CWO) for possible positive outcomes The meeting was aimed at addressing negative socio cultural norms that powers violence against women and girls. Violence negatively affects women’s general well being and prevent women from fully participating in the society. Virgin Heart foundation Team on a monitoring exercise, explained violence in details and some harmful socio cultural norms that power violence against women and girls. The team expressed regret that sometime women are the perpetrators of their own violence without knowing it. This is seen in cases of forceful widowhood practices. The women were told to detest any form of cultural practices that shrinks their safe spaces, urged them to take all cases of violence and abuses seriously because doing nothing in cases of violence makes them part of the problem. They were advised to stand up, step in, reach out and take actions against violence, render help to victims and stop victim shaming. CONCLUSION/OUTCOME The meeting yielded great impacts on the women. There was high rate of exposure as they were meant to know various socio cultural practices they blindly engage themselves in, unknowingly to them that they are violence against them. They promised not to let the message die in their hands, they will ensure it get to people who needs to hear them. OUTPUT: Monitoring exercise was successfully implemented. AWARENESS CREATION WITH FAITH BASED WOMEN GROUP ON ADDRESSING NEGATIVE SOCIO CULTURAL NORMS THAT EXACERBATES VAWG. ![]() Virgin Heart foundation team went to St Paul’s Catholic mission Ogbenneisii autonomous community, Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, Imo state for an awareness creation with faith based women group to identify, challenge and change the harmful socio norms that justify and exacerbates violence against women and girls in the community. Peace Dike, the convener, Virgin Heart foundation gave an overview of the Action Aid SLOC VAWG project and what the foundation in collaboration with Actionaid tends to achieve. Barrister Ihunanyachukwu Okoroji of the NHRC spoke to the women on understanding Human Right as tool to tackle VAWG. She went forward to explain human right as a tool that supports women from attaining equal opportunities with men. She hinted on the socio cultural norms that infringe human rights, and emphasized on the need for women to know their rights and also rise to tackle these norms that contribute gender inequality. CONCLUSION/OUTCOMES The women had been empowered to rise and tackle the socio cultural norms that are limiting their safe space. There was increased reporting channel. ACTIVITY 4 QUARTERLY REVIEW MEETING WITH BOYS OF ST PATRICK’S MISSION SCHOOL OGBE. On the 5th of April 2022, Virgin Heart foundation with support from Action Aid Nigeria went for a quarterly review meeting with the boys as champions of change to support them towards addressing negative socio cultural norms that exacerbates violence against women and girls in the school environment. Violence in school environment can interfere with students’ educational opportunities especially girls. An early effort to address this issue is a perfect way of prevention. Virgin heart foundation team had identified various forms of violence prevalence in this school to include bullying, sexual harassment, intimidation, corporal punishment etc which are always as a result of power imbalance and gender inequality. The male peer educators were urged to always influence their peers by changing the perception and notion they have concerning women. They were also advised not to engaged in any form of violence and to always speak out when violated. The Boy’s right club as agents of change were asked to organized two days training for newly inducted Peer Educators, using training manuals made available to them. CONCLUSION: New members of the club would be trained as peer educator to changing socio-cultural norms that exacerbates VAWG within the school environment. |
